Keep moving during active labor.

While in early labor you will need to relax and save energy for later. Once active labor has begun, and clearance from your caregiver, it is the time to get up and move.

There are many positions to try during labor. That said, you will feel which ones work best for you. Changing positions can help your discomforts, baby to rotate/descend, widen your pelvis area and labor progress faster. With all the benefits of moving your body during active labor, why not give it a try.

Standing positions like walking/side walking up and down the stairs and slow dancing with your partner work with gravity.

Sitting on a birth ball, on the toilet, squatting and lunging also work with gravity and give your baby more room to rotate and descend. Hands/knees on the ground or lying on the birth ball have the same benefits in addition to relieving back pain.

If you are stuck in bed for any reasons you can always get around with help, the peanut ball is a wonderful tool for women using an epidural. Changing positions every 40 minutes is best. You may want to try all the different positions pre-labor with your partner's help, but the easiest way is to follow your instincts.
